PROJECTS
The Next Big Thing (as of March 13, 2013):
Well, I have Alexandra Teague to thank for inducting me into this nefarious group. We'll see if my lameness gets me excommunicated . . .
What is the working title of the book?
Landscape/Portrait/Figure/Form (forthcoming in late 2013 as part of the Omnidawn Chapbook Series).
Where did the idea come from for the book?
For 10 years or so, I have had the idea of writing a book of poems about Paul Klee paintings. That quickly morphed into a project that explores the many ways poetry and art overlap. I'm especially interested in the vocabulary art (especially painting) and poetry share—line, form, figure, landscape, tone, depth, style, and of course, the self-portrait.
What genre does your book fall under?
Poetry. Some of the poems are prose poems, others are sort of funny poems. Some are both.
What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
Frog and Toad make a cameo appearance in this book, so clearly, I would play both parts.
What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?
Boy sees art; boy wants to write poems about art; boy plays with the discourse of art and poetry; boy has second thoughts about using the word "discourse."
How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
Probably a couple of years.
What else about your book might pique the reader's interest?
Readers who like the self-portraits in Works & Days will probably enjoy these even more. This book also contains a few poems that explicitly involve or address the reader. One poem in particular invites the reader to pick his or her favorite titles from a list. There is an homage to Adrienne Rich, Hieronymous Bosch, Paul Klee and the Choose Your Own Adventure books. And, as I note above, Frog and Toad—the fan favorites from the previous book—are back but in somewhat more muted form.
Also, look for a super cool cover by the fantastic artist Lora Fosberg.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Neither—it's poetry.
My tagged writers for next week are:
- Judy Halebsky
- Keith Ekiss
Look for their words on March 20, 2013 at the links above.
